Leipzig – A 53-year-old roadie died Thursday morning in Leipzig during setup for a concert by pop star Nino de Angelo (61, “Jenseits von Eden”).
According to police, the 53-year-old fell from a great height while setting up the stage. “The man died in the hospital,” police spokeswoman Susanne Lübke told BILD.
“The stagehand was working on a cherry picker, which, for unknown reasons, only had three of its four support arms extended. As a result, the cherry picker toppled over during a rotating movement, and the 53-year-old worker fell seven meters,” added state directorate spokesperson Ingolf Ulrich on Thursday afternoon.
The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is ongoing. Nino de Angelo’s concert has been canceled for today due to the tragic accident.
“I’m here in Leipzig and unfortunately have to share some sad news with you. This morning there was a fatal, tragic accident during the production setup. Due to this, we will not be playing the concert,” Nino de Angelo said on his Instagram channel, his voice choked with tears. “Tomorrow we’ll continue in Hanover. The show must go on. I’m very sorry. Our condolences go out to the family.”
The pop singer and his band crew were not yet in the concert hall at the time of the accident. Nino de Angelo recorded his video near his hotel at the Old Town Hall.
“It is with great shock and sadness that we must announce that a tragic accident occurred today during the production setup for the concert with Nino de Angelo at the Quarterback Immobilien Arena in Leipzig. Our thoughts are with the family,” the concert promoter announced.
The concert in Leipzig has been postponed to December 9. On Friday, Nino de Angelo will begin his “Someday in Life” tour (until November 2025) as planned in Hanover (April 4).
