Five concert-goers were injured when strong winds caused a portion of the stage to collapse on them during a festival in Thailand.

The music fans were at the front watching a local band during the Chumphae Chinese Opera Festival when a gust suddenly blew and shoved a metal scaffold that held large speakers in Khon Kaen, Thailand, on November 18.

Some of them were struck by falling sound systems and advertisement signs before being rescued.

Paramedics, police, and organisers helped to remove the structure which detached from the platform and fell onto the audience.

The concert was halted during the chaos and an emergency rescue operation was done to extract those who were trapped underneath.

Band member Thanachote Silapornprasert said: ‚The wind was so strong that night. The crew were pulling the ropes attached to the speakers so that they would not tilt. It was just too strong.

‚We visited those who were injured and helped them with their medical bills. We are hoping for their fast recovery.‘

The injured concert-goers were taken to Chum Phae Hospital and four of them were discharged the same day. One of them had to remain longer for an X-ray scan.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.

The Chumphae Chinese Opera Festival celebrates traditional opera, offering locals and tourists a unique chance to experience Chinese culture in Thailand.
